Dalmatia

If you are planning to travel in Croatia, a historical city of Zadar or region of Dalmatia seem reasonable place to start from. Zadar is situated on the coast in central part of Croatia and is surrounded by 4 absolutely breathtaking Croatian National Parks:

  • Plitvice Lakes – The Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia’s most popular tourist attraction, was granted UNESCO World Heritage status in 1979. Located roughly halfway between capital city Zagreb and Zadar on the coast, the lakes are a definite must-see in Croatia.

  • Paklenica National Park – The Paklenica karst river canyon is a national park in Croatia. It is located in Starigrad, northern Dalmatia, at the southern slopes of Velebit mountain, not far from Zadar.

  • Kornati National Park – The Kornati National Park is often mentioned as “nautical paradise” in tourist publications. And really, in “slalom” sailing through the 89 unforgettable islands, islets and reefs in the Kornati National Park, you will test all of your nautical skills, particularly if the weather puts in some effort… You’ll need a valid ticket to sail through the National Park.

  • Krka National Park with beautiful waterfalls, lakes and designated swimming area. Krka National Park is one of the Croatian national parks, named after the river Krka (ancient Greek: Kyrikos) that it encloses. It is located along the middle-lower course of the Krka River in central Dalmatia just a few kilometers northeast of the city of Šibenik. Best to get there with the car – leave it in a car park in a city of Skradin and take boat to the waterfalls (places are limited so better get there early). You can enjoy swimming in the lake or you can take another boat and visit old Monasteries and walking paths. I did notice a camping site nearby so if you fancy a tent this may be it. I would personally consider. Truly amazing place.

Zadar is the oldest continuously inhabited city in Croatia. It is situated on the Adriatic Sea, at the northwestern part of Ravni Kotari region. Zadar gained its urban structure in Roman times; during the time of Julius Caesar and Emperor Augustus, the town was fortified and the city walls with towers and gates were built. On the western side of the town were the forum, the basilica and the temple, while outside the town were the amphitheatre and cemeteries. The aqueduct which supplied the town with water is partially preserved. Inside the ancient town, a medieval town had developed with a series of churches and monasteries being built.
